Managing Coal Ash at Gambrills, Maryland

Constellation Energy is committed to the Gambrills community, the environment, and to keeping residents informed about our remediation work at the BBSS sand and gravel mine site. Coal ash from our Anne Arundel County power plants was used as engineered fill to reclaim the mined land and restore it to productive use. This fill activity was permitted by the State of Maryland and included pollution prevention measures, such as capping of the completed fill and regular groundwater monitoring. In the course of that monitoring, Constellation Energy identified trends of increasing levels of metals or sulfates in some of the groundwater samples. Since that time we have continued to work closely with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to address and remediate the problem.

Constellation Energy is committed to protecting human health and the environment by:

Constellation Energy is meeting all of the requirements of the consent agreement signed with MDE in October 2007. In May 2008, Constellation Energy submitted to MDE a comprehensive analysis of the BBSS site that includes recommendations on how best to achieve MDE-established goals. The analysis was subsequently updated in September 2010.

This website will be updated regularly to provide information on the progress of Constellation Energy's efforts at the Gambrills site. In addition, Constellation Energy expects to host periodic information meetings to discuss proposed remediation plans, water supplies, and schedules. Notices about these meetings will be posted on this Web site. Please bookmark this site for future reference.
