Facts About Coal Ash

Facts about coal ash

Coal ash, which includes fly ash, is the residue that remains after coal is combusted. The major source of coal ash is power plants that burn coal to generate electricity. In Maryland, Constellation Energy operates three coal-fired power plants. With the installation of pollution control devices in recent decades, nearly all coal ash produced today in Maryland is captured. The resulting residue, which totals approximately 800,000 tons each year, must be managed and, as much as possible, put to new, beneficial uses, such as the manufacture of concrete.
