How Constellation Energy manages coal ash
Constellation Energy adheres to specific guidelines in managing the coal
ash its power plants produce:
- Before it is transported, coal ash is wetted and then carried in trucks
that are covered to prevent leakage. Before the trucks leave the power
plant, they are washed down to remove coal ash residue. Some of our ash is
also transported in trucks designed to carry and fully contain dry powdery
solids for recycling purposes.
- When wetted coal ash that is to be used as fill material, such as for
road construction or mine reclamation, is delivered to a site, it is further
wetted and compacted to prevent dispersion of dust.
- For coal ash to be used in reclamation, the facility must comply with
new MDE regulations for placement of ash. Constellation Energy currently is
not placing coal ash for reclamation in Maryland.
